Materials | yarn or thread needle threader tray |
In this activity the child learns how to thread a needle. This is a skill the child will need for sewing activities such as Button Sewing and Embroidery.
Presentations
Hook-type Needle Threader
- Take the material to a mat or table.
- Hold the threader in your subdominant hand.
- Hold the needle in your dominant hand. Place the eye of the needle on the hook of the threader as shown.
- Take the yarn and loop it through the hook of the threader near one of the ends.
- Pull the needle off the threader, pulling the yarn through the eye.
- Take the yarn off the hook of the threader.
- The needle is now threaded.
- Take the yarn off the needle so the work will be ready for the next person.
Loop-type Needle Threader
- Take the material to a mat or table.
- Hold the needle in your subdominant hand.
- Hold the threader in your dominant hand.
- Insert the wire loop through the eye of the needle.
- Let the needle rest at the base of the wire loop.
- Transfer the threader to your subdominant hand.
- Take one end of the thread and put it through the wire loop of the threader.
- Pull the needle off the threader, pulling the thread through the eye.
- Take the thread out of the wire loop of the threader.
- The needle is now threaded.
- Take the thread off the needle so the work will be ready for the next person.

Control of Error
- The child will know that the work has been done correctly if the needle ends up being threaded.
