Activity 1

  • Invite your student to join you at a workplace.
  • Say, “We will continue to listen to African Adventures”.
  • Page 19 - What do you think sleeping in a tent is like? How does it compare to sleeping in a bed?
  • Page 19 – What are the animals in the picture doing?
  • How do you think the narrator felt when she saw the first of the five animals she wanted to see? What are the “big five?”
  • Page 20 – Analyze the bird nest on the picture. How does it compare with other bird nests you have seen?
  • Page 21 – How does the narrator describe the monkeys? Why were the visitors advised not to have food?
  • Page 22 – What safety rules did the narrator learn about? Why are safety rules important when traveling? Do you have safety rules in your home? What are they?
  • Page 21 and 25. How are baboon and a vervet monkey similar? How are they different?
  • List all the animals that the narrator came across on day 2.

Activity 2

  • Have your student examine his or her own hands and feet. Ask, “How do you use your hands and feet?”
  • Lay out the cards of the animals in front of your student. Have your student show you where the paws of each animal are.
  • Use the animal replicas (giraffe, hippopotamus, lion, zebra, cheetah, rhinoceros) to have your student show you the paws of each animal.
  • Look at the chart of the animal tracks and explain to your student which animal tracks belongs to which animal.
  • Have your student place the cards with the animal tracks in the same order as the chart (left to right, top to bottom, have them replicate the chart with the cards).
  • Using the cards as a reference, have your student match the animal tracks on the chart to the animal tracks labels (i.e. point to the tracks of the giraffe on the chart and ask your child to identify it amongst the cards, and then to find the matching label).

  • Vocabulary: Water hole, binoculars, baboons, troop.

  • Suggested time: 45 mins- 60 mins

Variations and Extensions

  • If humans had paws instead of hands and feet, what would they look like? Draw the paw the way you imagine it. How would the life of a human being be different? What would be the pros and cons?
  • Research the different species of baboons. How are they similar? How are they different?
  • Compare day 1 to day 2 in the book.
