You might remember the movie "The Karate Kid". In it Mr. Miyagi teaches Daniel the basic movements needed for karate through seemingly unrelated, repetitive tasks (wax on, wax off). In Montessori we use a similar strategy to prepare children for math and reading and writing. We call this indirect preparation.
